CHAPTER NINETEEN
Rio was sitting on the steps of his front porch smoking a blunt to the face, when he heard a bunch of rustling in the bushes. Instinctively, he reached for his pistol and pointed it at the shrubs that stood in his front yard. Mama Rose and London had left early that morning to go to the flea market, so he was home alone. It was early, and he didn’t have time for any bullshit, but he stayed on his P’s and Q’s just in case bullshit made time for him.
It was only 10am and the sun was already shining brightly. The weatherman called for record breaking temperatures. He was outside in a dingy wife beater, some torn basketball shorts, and house slippers. It was Saturday morning and he was chilling. His plan was to stay home and rest all day. His head was fucked up; he didn’t want to deal with the streets today. He’d gotten word last night that his boss man, Kane, had been killed in a car explosion and now the entire hood was buzzing, wondering who was going to take over the empire. Rio had already had enough on his plate before he received the tragic news. When the city condemned Club Fantasy, they put a deep hole in his pockets. Now he had to find other ways to get his work off and another spot to conduct his business. He’d been trying for weeks to reach Kane and could never get through to him, and now he knew why. Kane was dead. Just as he put the gun down, he heard more noise coming from the bushes. Just as he stood his mother came from the bushes.
“Hey De Janeiro!” she beamed wearing a toothless smile.
He sighed heavily before returning to his seat and placing his gun on the porch beside him. He looked up at his mother in disgust as she walked closer to him.
“What do you want now, Tye? A rock?” he asked, already growing aggravated.
“No,” she said actually proud of herself. “I want you to come with me, I have something for you.”
Skeptical, he looked at her with furrowed eyebrows. “What the fuck could you possibly have for me?” he wanted to know.
“You’re going to have to come see, they’re too heavy to carry by myself,” she said, still wearing a smile.
Now his interest was piqued. “What the fuck are you talking about, Tye?”
“I know I haven’t been a good mother, but let me make it up to you,” she babbled. “I have something valuable to you in my possession.”
“Stop talking in circles and tell me what the fuck it is!” he fumed.
She walked closer to him and sat down beside him. He cringed and covered his nose with his hand. His mother smelled terrible, like she hadn’t bathed in months.
“I lifted some duffle bags from Paris’ boyfriend a few weeks back. I was going to keep most of it for myself, but I don’t know what to do with the rest.
